Associated Press ERNEST AVANTS, left, is escorted Friday from the federal courthouse in Jackson, after being convicted the 1966 slaying of a black sharecropper, a crime prosecutors say was staged King Jr. to southern Mississippi '66 slaying with of one Associated Press JACKSON, Miss.

A 72-yearold reputed Klansman was convicted Friday in the 1966 slaying of a black sharecropper, a crime prosecutors say was staged to lure Martin Luther King Jr. to southern Mississippi to be assassinated. Ernest Avants, a stroke survivor, remained seated in his wheelchair as the verdict was read. Federal prosecutors said they won't seek the death penalty, meaning he faces up to life in prison at sentencing May 9. "It's like being hungry for so, so long and you get a good meal under belt.

You're not so hungry any more," said Jesse White, the 65- year-old son of victim Ben Chester White after the verdict was read. The defense said it would appeal. Avants was acquitted of murder during a state trial in 1967, but the federal charge of aiding and abetting murder was filed after authorities realized recently White was killed on federal land. The 67-year-old victim was lured deep into the hom*ochitto National Forest with: a story about helping with a chore, only to find himself staring into the barrel of a rifle. According to prosecutors, his last words: "Lord, what have I done to deserve this?" Prosecutors told the jury 37 years could not wash away the horror of White's slaying or allow his killer to go free.

"You won't find an instruction that you get a pass after you're 65 to lure the Rev. Martin Luther to be assassinated. ends conviction suspect years old," prosecutor Paige Fitzgerald said. "Tell Mr. White that you know there is no amount of time that can forgive this crime." The verdict was returned just a few hours after final arguments in the case and just three days after the trial began.

The judge in Avants' trial had barred hate-crime evidence, but prosecutors freely noted White was black and the three suspects in the case were white. The defense argued the case hinged largely on statements by a long-dead suspect they said was a chronic liar. Defense attorney Tom Royals said it was difficult to defend a case so old and that his client was not surprised by the verdict. "I think he could have predicted it," Royals said. U.S.

Attorney Dunn Lampton said prosecutors used the same testimony as in the 1967 trial. "The difference was the attitude of the jurors," Lampton said. "Hopefully it means the country will stop looking at Mississippi like we were still in the '60s." Prosecutors said Avants and two white companions offered White $2 and a soft drink to help them. White, who had no connection with the civil rights movement, was driven into the woods, shot repeatedly and dumped into a creek bed. Prosecutors pinned much of their case on statements made by the late James Lloyd Jones, who told authorities years ago he was there when White was murdered.
